Then they asked him to stay on for a few days.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li class=\"margin25\"><a class=\"rtBibleRef\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/nasb95\/Acts%2019.5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-version=\"nasb95\" data-purpose=\"bible-reference\" data-reference=\"Acts 19.5\">Acts 19:5<\/a>, &#8220;And when they heard this, they were baptized\u00a0in the name of the Lord Jesus.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.75em 0px; text-align: justify; color: #000000; text-transform: none; text-indent: 0px; letter-spacing: normal; font-family: Verdana, Tahoma, 'DejaVu Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; word-spacing: 0px; white-space: normal; orphans: 2; widows: 2; background-color: #ffffff; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-color: initial;\">The reason they were baptizing &#8220;in the name of Jesus&#8221; is not because it was a formula, but because the phrase, &#8220;in the name of&#8221; means &#8220;in the authority of.\u00a0 We can see proof of this in\u00a0<a class=\"rtBibleRef\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/nasb95\/Acts%204.7-10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-version=\"nasb95\" data-purpose=\"bible-reference\" data-reference=\"Acts 4.7-10\">Acts 4:7-10<\/a>,<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"margin: 0.75em 30px; color: #000000; text-transform: none; text-indent: 0px; letter-spacing: normal; font-family: Verdana, Tahoma, 'DejaVu Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; word-spacing: 0px; white-space: normal; orphans: 2; widows: 2; background-color: #ffffff; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-color: initial;\"><p>&#8220;And when they had placed them in the center, they began to inquire,\u00a0&#8216;By what power, or in what name, have you done this?&#8217;\u00a0<sup>8<\/sup>\u00a0Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, &#8216;Rulers and elders of the people,\u00a0<sup>9<\/sup>\u00a0if we are on trial today for a benefit done to a sick man, as to how this man has been made well,\u00a0<sup>10<\/sup>\u00a0let it be known to all of you, and to all the people of Israel, that\u00a0by the name of Jesus Christ\u00a0the Nazarene, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by this name this man stands here before you in good health.'&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.75em 0px; text-align: justify; color: #000000; text-transform: none; text-indent: 0px; letter-spacing: normal; font-family: Verdana, Tahoma, 'DejaVu Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; word-spacing: 0px; white-space: normal; orphans: 2; widows: 2; background-color: #ffffff; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-color: initial;\">The Jews asked &#8220;by what power, or in what name, have you done this?&#8221;\u00a0 Peter answers and says that it was in the name of Jesus that they had healed.\u00a0 In other words, &#8220;in the name of Jesus&#8221; means that it is by the power and authority found in Christ.\u00a0 We can see this usage many places in the New Testament.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"margin: 0px 0px 0.75em; padding: 0px 0px 0px 30px; text-align: justify; color: #000000; text-transform: none; text-indent: 0px; letter-spacing: normal; font-family: Verdana, Tahoma, 'DejaVu Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; word-spacing: 0px; white-space: normal; orphans: 2; widows: 2; background-color: #ffffff; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-color: initial;\">\n<li class=\"margin25\"><a class=\"rtBibleRef\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/nasb95\/Acts%203.6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-version=\"nasb95\" data-purpose=\"bible-reference\" data-reference=\"Acts 3.6\">Acts 3:6<\/a>\u00a0&#8220;But Peter said, &#8220;I do not possess silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you:\u00a0In the name of Jesus Christ\u00a0the Nazarene&#8211;walk!&#8221;<\/li>\n<li class=\"margin25\"><a class=\"rtBibleRef\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/nasb95\/Acts%2016.18\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-version=\"nasb95\" data-purpose=\"bible-reference\" data-reference=\"Acts 16.18\">Acts 16:18<\/a>, And she continued doing this for many days. But Paul was greatly annoyed, and turned and said to the spirit, &#8220;I command you\u00a0in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her!&#8221; And it came out at that very moment.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li class=\"margin25\"><a class=\"rtBibleRef\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/nasb95\/1%20Cor.%205.4-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-version=\"nasb95\" data-purpose=\"bible-reference\" data-reference=\"1 Cor. 5.4-5\">1 Cor. 5:4-5<\/a>,\u00a0&#8220;In the name of our Lord Jesus, when you are assembled, and I with you in spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus,\u00a0<sup>5<\/sup>\u00a0I have decided to deliver such a one to Satan for the destruction of his flesh, that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li class=\"margin25\"><a class=\"rtBibleRef\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/nasb95\/1%20Cor.%206.11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-version=\"nasb95\" data-purpose=\"bible-reference\" data-reference=\"1 Cor. 6.11\">1 Cor. 6:11<\/a>, &#8220;And such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified\u00a0in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, and in the Spirit of our God.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li class=\"margin25\"><a class=\"rtBibleRef\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/nasb95\/Eph.%205.20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-version=\"nasb95\" data-purpose=\"bible-reference\" data-reference=\"Eph. 5.20\">Eph. 5:20<\/a>, &#8220;always giving thanks for all things\u00a0in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ\u00a0to God, even the Father.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li class=\"margin25\"><a class=\"rtBibleRef\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/nasb95\/2%20Thess.%203.6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-version=\"nasb95\" data-purpose=\"bible-reference\" data-reference=\"2 Thess. 3.6\">2 Thess. 3:6<\/a>, &#8220;Now we command you, brethren,\u00a0in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you keep aloof from every brother who leads an unruly life and not according to the tradition which you received from us.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.75em 0px; text-decoration-color: initial;\">As you can see, &#8220;in the name of the Lord Jesus&#8221; and &#8220;in the name of Jesus&#8221; speaks of &#8220;in the authority of Jesus.&#8221;\u00a0 Therefore, when someone is properly baptized, they are baptized in the name of Jesus; that is, by the authority of Jesus.\u00a0 Therefore, when they are properly baptized in the name of Jesus, they should say, &#8220;I baptize you in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,&#8221; just as Jesus commanded us to do.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify; color: #000000; text-transform: none; line-height: 2em; text-indent: 0px; letter-spacing: normal; font-family: Verdana, Tahoma, 'DejaVu Sans', sans-serif; font-variant-caps: normal; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-color: initial;\">Didache and the baptismal formula<\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.75em 0px; text-align: justify; color: #000000; text-transform: none; text-indent: 0px; letter-spacing: normal; font-family: Verdana, Tahoma, 'DejaVu Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; word-spacing: 0px; white-space: normal; orphans: 2; widows: 2; background-color: #ffffff; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-color: initial;\">The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/carm.org\/didache\">Didache<\/a>\u00a0is a very old document that was written probably between the year of 65 and 80 A.D.\u00a0 It is also called the &#8220;Teaching of the 12 Apostles.&#8221; The Didache is not Scripture, but it is clearly an ancient document and sheds light on what the early church was doing in the first century and what the baptismal formula was.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.75em 0px 0.75em 40px; text-align: justify; color: #000000; text-transform: none; text-indent: 0px; letter-spacing: normal; font-family: Verdana, Tahoma, 'DejaVu Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; word-spacing: 0px; white-space: normal; orphans: 2; widows: 2; background-color: #ffffff; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-color: initial;\">&#8220;But concerning baptism, thus baptize ye: having first recited all these precepts,\u00a0baptize in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, in running water,&#8221; (Didache 7:1).<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.75em 0px; text-align: justify; color: #000000; text-transform: none; text-indent: 0px; letter-spacing: normal; font-family: Verdana, Tahoma, 'DejaVu Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; word-spacing: 0px; white-space: normal; orphans: 2; widows: 2; background-color: #ffffff; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-color: initial;\">If the early church did what some modern-day groups like the Oneness Pentecostal cult do and baptized &#8220;in the name of Jesus,&#8221;
