others. The Latin word gratiaencompasses the idea of being grateful and acknowledging the goodness in our lives. Embracing such an emphasis can propel us into the upcoming year with renewed strength and hope.

Scientific research supports the health benefits of a grateful heart. Gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness. It helps people feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity and build strong relationships.

Two psychologists, Dr. Robert A. Emmons of the University of California and Dr. Michael E. McCullough of the University of Miami, have done much research on gratitude. In one study, they asked the participants to write a few sentences each week, focusing on particular topics.

One group wrote about things they were grateful for that had occurred during the week. A second group wrote about daily irritations or things that had displeased them. The third wrote about events that had affected them with no emphasis on being positive or negative. After 10 weeks, those who wrote about gratitude were more optimistic and felt better about their lives. Surprisingly, they also exercised more and had fewer visits to physicians than those who focused on sources of aggravation.

Another leading researcher in this field, Dr. Martin E. P. Seligman, a psychologist at the University of Pennsylvania, tested the impact of different interventions on 411 people. When the week’s assignment was to write and personally deliver a letter of gratitude to someone who had never been properly thanked for his or her kindness, participants immediately exhibited a huge increase in happiness scores. This impact was greater than that from any other assignment.

Other studies have looked at how gratitude can improve relationships. A study of couples found that individuals who took time to express gratitude for their partner not only felt more positive toward the other person but also felt more comfortable expressing concerns about their relationship.

Why does gratitude have such a powerful impact on our health? With gratitude we appreciate what we have instead of always reaching for something new in the hopes it will make us happier. We focus on what is abundant instead of what we lack. With gratitude, half empty cups fill to overflowing.

Though it may seem awkward at first, the habit of cultivating gratitude grows stronger with practice. When we acknowledge the goodness in our lives and recognize that the source of much of that goodness lies outside ourselves, we connect to something larger—whether to other people, nature or a higher power.

Here are a few suggestions for unleashing the power of gratitude:

Write a thank-you note. Send at least one appreciation letter each month. Reconnect with someone from the past who has blessed your life.

Keep a gratitude journal. Make it a habit to write down a few small gifts you receive each day.

Count your blessings. Pick a time every week to enumerate your blessings. How high can you count?

Pay it forward. Gratitude and giving go hand-in-hand. Help someone (anonymously) as a way of showing thanks for the many times others have helped you

Be mindful about the moment. Focus on the everyday, simple things you are grateful for such as the warmth of the sun, a pleasant sound, etc. Offer up a breathe prayer of thanks.

Melodie Beattie penned the following about the power of a grateful heart:

“Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. There is power in a thankful heart. Thanksgiving brings contentment. An attitude of thanksgiving accepts and embraces God’s will. Begin to thank God for all the blessings he has given instead of dwelling on the negative. Discontent dries up the soul. Look at what Elisabeth Elliott, who lost her husband on the mission field and faced multitudes of hardships, says about loving God’s will and being content:

To love God is to love His will. It is to wait quietly for life to be measured by one who knows us through and through. It is to be content with His timing and His wise apportionment. It is to follow in the steps of the Master, as did Paul, who was able to say that he had learned contentment no matter what the circumstances. His circumstances when he wrote that? Prison. No easy lesson, but great gain, which is the sum of godliness plus contentment. (1 Timothy 6:6)

Look at the Example of Jesus

He followed the will of His Father to the very end. He obeyed without complaint. In Philippians 2:5-8, Paul says that we should have that same attitude. Jesus made Himself nothing and took on the very nature of a servant. He humbled Himself and became obedient to death. We also are to have this same attitude with a humble and thankful acceptance of God’s will for our lives. Jesus embraced hardship without a complaint.

The Duke of Wellington was a British military leader who regretted that he had not learned the secret of praise during his lifetime. He had many great accomplishments and even defeated Napoleon at Waterloo. He was a brilliant and demanding man and when he was older, he realized that there were areas in his life that needed to change. In his old age a woman asked him this question, “What would you do differently if you had your life to live over again?”

He thought carefully and said, “I would give more praise.”

This is a lesson for all of us.

To learn to be people of praise and thanksgiving to God all the days of our lives would be a great accomplishment. There is greatness and happiness in thanksgiving.

“Would you know who is the greatest saint in the world?… It is he who is always thankful to God, who wills everything that God wills, who receives everything as an instance of God’s goodness and has a heart always ready to praise God for it… Could you therefore work miracles, you could not do more for yourself than by this thankful spirit, for it turns all that it touches into happiness.” —William Law

David writes in Psalm 116:17, “I will sacrifice a thank offering to you and call on the name of the LORD.” Did you know that thanking God for a difficulty is actually an offering that He highly values? You are bringing a gift of thanks to Him. It is so easy to complain. It is so easy to point the finger and find fault. But to come with the opposite attitude and give thanks brings breakthrough and joyful contentment.

How to Practice Thankfulness

Let each of us seek to have an attitude of gratitude and thanksgiving, and rise to a new level of holiness. Here are some ways to practice this attitude in everyday life:

Thank and praise God for everything in your life.

Thank Him for even the difficulties. When we begin to thank God for what we have, rather than comparing ourselves with others, it opens the door for God’s blessings.

Each one should test his own actions. There is a tendency in all of us to take credit for our success.

However, a thankful heart recognizes that all good things come from the hand of a sovereign God and that without his mercy, nothing good is possible. We are reminded in 1 Corinthians 4:7, “For who makes you different from anyone else? My pride is the idolatrous worship of myself. And that is the national religion of Hell!”

Thanksgiving, however, is the perfect cure for pride. And that can be done as we continuously:

(1) Keep reflecting on the cross and

(2) Incorporate thanksgiving as a part of our regular prayer.

Grace Bible Church of Windsor 4 Benefits of a Thankful Heart – Grace Bible Church of Windsor (gbc-windsor.org)

7 Scientifically Proven Benefits of Gratitude

You’ll be grateful that you made the change (and you’ll sleep better).

Posted April 3, 2015 | Reviewed by Ekua Hagan

Here are seven scientifically proven benefits:

Gratitude opens the door to more relationships. Not only does saying “thank you” constitute good manners, but showing appreciation can help you win new friends, according to a 2014 study published in Emotion. The study found that thanking a new acquaintance makes them more likely to seek an ongoing relationship. So whether you thank a stranger for holding the door or send a thank-you note to that colleague who helped you with a project, acknowledging other people’s contributions can lead to new opportunities.

Gratitude improves physical health. Grateful people experience fewer aches and pains and report feeling healthier than other people, according to a 2012 study published in Personality and Individual Differences. Not surprisingly, grateful people are also more likely to take care of their health. They exercise more often and are more likely to attend regular check-ups, which is likely to contribute to further longevity.

Gratitude improves psychological health. Gratitude reduces a multitude of toxic emotions, from envy and resentment to frustration and regret. Robert Emmons, a leading gratitude researcher, has conducted multiple studies on the link between gratitude and well-being. His research confirms that gratitude effectively increases happiness and reduces depression.

Gratitude enhances empathy and reduces aggression. Grateful people are more likely to behave in a prosocial manner, even when others behave less kindly, according to a 2012 study by the University of Kentucky. Study participants who ranked higher on gratitude scales were less likely to retaliate against others, even when given negative feedback. They experienced more sensitivity and empathy toward other people and a decreased desire to seek revenge.

Grateful people sleep better. Writing in a gratitude journal improves sleep, according to a 2011 study published in Applied Psychology: Health and Well-Being. Spend just 15 minutes jotting down a few grateful sentiments before bed, and you may sleep better and longer.

Gratitude improves self-esteem. A 2014 study published in the Journal of Applied Sport Psychology found that gratitude increased athletes’ self-esteem, an essential component of optimal performance. Other studies have shown that gratitude reduces social comparisons. Rather than becoming resentful toward people who have more money or better jobs—a major factor in reduced self-esteem—grateful people are able to appreciate other people’s accomplishments.

Gratitude increases mental strength. For years, research has shown gratitude not only reduces stress, but it may also play a major role in overcoming trauma.
