The first,\u00a0<strong><em>logos<\/em>, refers principally to the total inspired Word of God<\/strong> and to Jesus, Who is the living <em>Logos<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h4>Biblical Examples of <em>Logos<\/em><\/h4>\n<p>The following passages of Scripture give examples of the <em>logos<\/em> of God:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>\u201cIn the beginning was the Word <\/em>[logos]<em>, and the Word <\/em>[logos]<em> was with God, and the Word <\/em>[logos]<em> was God\u201d<\/em> (John 1:1).<\/li>\n<li><em>\u201cThe seed is the word <\/em>[logos]<em> of God\u201d<\/em> (Luke 8:11).<\/li>\n<li><em>\u201cHolding forth the word <\/em>[logos]<em> of life\u201d<\/em> (Philippians 2:16).<\/li>\n<li><em>\u201cStudy to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word<\/em>[logos]<em> of truth\u201d<\/em> (II Timothy 2:15).<\/li>\n<li><em>\u201cFor the word <\/em>[logos]<em> of God is quick, and powerful\u201d<\/em> (Hebrews 4:12).<\/li>\n<li><em>\u201cBeing born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word <\/em>[logos]<em> of God, which liveth and abideth forever\u201d<\/em> (I Peter 1:23).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><em>Rhema<\/em>\u2014The Spoken Word<\/h3>\n<p>The second primary Greek word that describes Scripture is <em>rhema<\/em>, which refers to a word that is spoken and means \u201can utterance.\u201d <strong>A rhema is a verse or portion of Scripture that the Holy Spirit brings to our attention with application to a current situation or need for direction.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Every word of God is inspired, and <em>\u201call scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness\u201d<\/em> (II Timothy 3:16). It is the Holy Spirit Who illuminates particular Scriptures for application in a daily walk with the Lord.<\/p>\n<p>The words of Jesus are significant on this point. <em>\u201cMan shall not live by bread alone, but by every word <\/em>[rhema]<em> that proceedeth out of the mouth of God\u201d<\/em> (Matthew 4:4). Jesus also stated, <em>\u201cThe words <\/em>[rhema]<em> that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life\u201d<\/em> (John 6:63).<\/p>\n<p>When God gives a rhema for us to act upon, He often <strong>confirms<\/strong> it by a second rhema, that <em>\u201cin the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word <\/em>[rhema]<em> be established\u201d<\/em> (II Corinthians 13:1).<\/p>\n<h4>Biblical Insights Into <em>Rhema<\/em>s<\/h4>\n<p>The following passages of Scripture provide insight into the <em>rhema<\/em>s of God:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>\u201cSo then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word <\/em>[rhema]<em> of God\u201d<\/em> (Romans 10:17).<\/li>\n<li><em>\u201cAnd take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word <\/em>[rhema]<em> of God\u201d<\/em> (Ephesians 6:17).<\/li>\n<li><em>\u201cHusbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word <\/em>[rhema]<em>\u201d<\/em> (Ephesians 5:25\u201326).<\/li>\n<li><em>\u201cIf ye abide in me, and my words <\/em>[rhema]<em> abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you\u201d<\/em> (John 15:7).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Biblical Examples of <em>Rhema<\/em>s<\/h4>\n<p>The following passages of Scripture give examples of the <em>rhema<\/em>s of God:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When Jesus told Peter to cast the fishing nets on the other side of the boat, Peter answered, <em>\u201cMaster, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word <\/em>[rhema]<em> I will let down the net\u201d<\/em> (Luke 5:5).<\/li>\n<li>When the angel told Mary that she would have a child, <em>\u201cMary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word <\/em>[rhema]<em>\u201d<\/em> (Luke 1:38).<\/li>\n<li>Simeon recalled the promise that he would see Christ before he died: <em>\u201cNow lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word <\/em>[rhema]<em>\u201d<\/em> (Luke 2:29).<\/li>\n<li>God gave John the message he was to preach as a forerunner to Christ: <em>\u201cThe word <\/em>[rhema]<em> of God came unto John\u201d<\/em>(Luke 3:2).<\/li>\n<li>God reminded Peter of His Word: <em>\u201cThen remembered I the word <\/em>[rhema]<em> of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost\u201d<\/em> (Acts 11:16).<\/li>\n<li>Jesus told Peter he would deny Him. <em>\u201cPeter remembered the word <\/em>[rhema]<em> of Jesus, which said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice\u201d<\/em> (Matthew 26:75).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>How do I \u201cget\u201d a <em>rhema<\/em>?<\/h3>\n<p>In the regular course of our daily reading of God\u2019s Word (<em>logos<\/em>), we need to <strong>ask God to speak to us through His Word and give us insight into it<\/strong>. The Holy Spirit can cause certain passages to stand out with significant meaning or application for our lives.
